Ever Thought Of Creating A Unique Hashtag For Your Elkhart Wedding?

August 19th, 2013

Elkhart Weddings & HashtagsOne of the features that has exploded in social media are hashtags. We see hashtags on pictures, on articles on how we are feeling. Did you know that hashtags are something that will work for you at your wedding?

It is the day of your Elkhart Wedding and all your friends are snapping away with their cell phone photos of you, your significant other and themselves having fun at your wedding and reception. Besides the hundreds of pictures that your Elkhart wedding photographer and videographer took, how will you ever see all of those Instagram, Twitter and Facebook shared photos from your friends and family? The best idea is hashtag your wedding!

When friends and family post their fabulous pictures to social media, hashtags make them instantly searchable! You and your guests will be able to run searches on your hashtag and view all of the pictures that were tagged and associated with your hashtag. The photos will be instantly searchable that night and you can relive all of the fun and enjoyment created at your Elkhart Wedding!

Keep in mind that the hashtag needs to be unique and original to your event. Choosing a hastag like #MyElkhartWedding or #MichianaWedding will just mix your photos with all the other photos under such a universal hashtag! So make it unique, do a hashtag search for every hashtag you come up with on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to make sure it isn’t previously used. With the pending explosion of wedding hashtags, using generic hastags like #JulieMikeWedding will be problematic.

How do you get the word out to your guests about which hashtag to use? You can promote your original hashtag on cute little cards or small signs that displayed on guest tables which makes the hashtag easy to reference as guests shoot and upload to social media. A chalkboard displayed next to the DJ or cake table, to remind guests of your hashtag. Have some business cards printed with the hashtag and insert them into your wedding invites before they are sent out. The business card is the right size for men to put into their wallets or women their purses and bring it with them to your wedding!

Elkhart Weddings | Floral Planning

April 17th, 2012

Planning your Elkhart Wedding, can be a rewarding, exciting, time for brides, grooms and their families. Elkhart brides dream of their wedding starting at a young age and it can be intoxicating bringing those dreams and plans to fruition. To bring it all together, a bride and groom must rely on the vendors they interview and hire to be knowledgeable, talented, professional and honest. Unfortunately as witnessed recently with Brides A La Mode, appearances can be hiding a darker truth! This is one of the reasons we so strongly promote hiring a professional wedding planner, not only can a wedding planner with their knowledge decrease your expenses, they are your advocate and their knowledge of other vendors in the market can help you avoid hiring lesser wedding vendors.

But if you can’t hire a wedding planner, here at Elkhart Weddings our mission is to arm you with the knowledge to assure that your Elkhart wedding dreams do come true and don’t end up like the friend bride of this bride:

…I was wondering if you had any advice to offer. My bff got married last August and when I started to plan my wedding, last May, she recommend that I hire the same floral designer she had hired, (name withheld). The floral designer when we met was very nice, and the pics of past events she had done looked good. We gave her a large deposit and I haven’t spoken to her since. My wedding is this July and I am in a near panic about using this floral designer.

At my bffs wedding in August the centerpieces and bouquets were a major disappointment. The bouquets looked skimpy and many of the flowers were wilted. One of bouquets was falling apart when delivered. The centerpieces were worse, my bff had seen a centerpiece in one of the wedding mags and the floral designer claimed that she could recreate it. The vases were plastic, we were expecting glass. Her family had paid for live flowers and we noticed many of them were fake. Like the bouquets many of the live flowers were sorry looking. Everything was cheap looking.

I am in a near panic, I have been trying to figure out what to do, I want to cancel and find someone else but I am running out the time and the designer says I will loose my deposit… It’s more money than I can afford to loose. What can I do?

Sara, stories like this break our heart, we are sorry to hear your story.

Don’t panic, just yet there is a possible way to assure that you get the floral decor that you have dreamed of. We are not defending the florist but when it comes to silk flowers being used in the centerpieces, many florists have a clause in their contract that states in the case of an emergency they can substitute silk flowers for the real thing. Emergencies would be the greenhouse/wholesaler failing to get the flowers to the florist in time or shipping poor quality flowers. Your friend should go back and find out why the substitution but we have a feeling this is just standard operating with this floral designer.

To protect yourself and your wedding we recommend you contact the floral designer and demand a demo appointment. I don’t know if your best friend had a demo of her floral designs, but my guess is that she didn’t, since many florists don’t like to provide them due to their costs. The purpose of a demo is to hash out the exact look of your wedding floral, mainly the table centerpieces, but it can include the bouquets too. Before the demo, inform the floral designer what you are looking for in your design, if like your friend you have several pictures form magazine or the internet this is a good place to start. This will allow them to order in the supplies they will need for the demo.

Then at the demo, you hash out the exact look. If you don’t like what you are presented with initially don’t be afraid, tell the designer how to change it to fit your South Bend wedding vision and they should change it right there for you. When you are satisfied with the design you are presented with have the designer break it down into an addendum to the contract. The contract should list what goes into the arrangements to achieve the design, like glass vs plastic, live vs fake, etc. It should also include a cost breakdown so there are no surprises when presented with the final bill.

Also take a camera, something better than a cell phone and get pictures of the final agreed upon floral centerpiece, give a copy to the designer for their records and one for yours. This will give the designer a reference to work from, especially if your wedding is still months off.

Many florists are reticent to do demos because of the cost involved and you may find they charge for this, but in our opinion, this is money well spent. First it will tell you if your and your floral designer are on the same page. Second it will show if the floral designer is capable of achieving your vision. Third, the floral demo will give you a good idea what the final cost to you as the customer will be. Finally, if the designer fails to deliver as promised at your wedding you will have proof of what they promised and legal standing.

As for you Sara, demand the demo and contract addendum and don’t take no for an answer. It is the only way we know you can protect yourself. If the designer fails to meet your vision in the demo then you have a good argument for getting your deposit back. Floral is an art and we admire those who can do it, but we also have seen many that just can’t!

Wedding Vendor Appearance

March 23rd, 2012

The doors to the back of the church open and standing there is the bride, looking more beautiful than she ever has in her life. Her gown white as snow and hair gracefully up-swept and a blush on her cheeks. She takes the first few steps down the center aisle of the church, towards where her tuxedo dressed, beaming groom awaits at the altar with their bridal party all dressed to the nines. All eyes are on her as she walks towards one of the most momentous decisions in her life…

Suddenly a guy in bowling shoes, black jeans and a camp shirt with half the tail of the camp shirt hanging outside his pants, steps into the center aisle from the pews, blocking the brides progress. All eyes turn to this shabbily dressed man as he lifts a camera, snaps 2 pictures and disappears back into the pews.

This is a true story, that I personally witnessed at my cousin’s wedding 4 years ago. Sadly I would have to look up pictures I have of the wedding to tell you what my cousin looked like in her dress, but the poorly dressed appearance of her wedding photographer is burned into my mind, especially at that moment. My cousin had sent out invites that said formal dress required and all of the guests were properly dressed. It was disgusting, he stuck out like sore thumb and my aunt asked him to leave early into the reception.

— Jennifer Berman

Jennifer is a friend of mine from Chicago. I called and asked her to write her story down after reading this post from Preston Bailey. Frankly the poor dress of some Elkhart wedding vendors has become a real problem in the wedding market, especially among photographers, videographers, photo booth hosts and disc jockeys.

Here at Elkhart Weddings we have seen photographers in similar dress to what Jennifer describes. We recently saw a photo of some videographers running around a wedding with “staff” printed on the back of their polo shirts covering three quarters of the fabric. One local photo booth company shows up to weddings in sweatshirts and blue jeans or tshirts in the summer. DJs can be the worst offenders, torn blue jeans and Def Leppard t-shirt was one of the all time worst we have seen.

Some Elkhart brides may shrug their shoulders and say, we don’t care, it’s no big deal but the truth of the matter is that it is. Yes we have somewhat become a casual society and guests will show up n bluejeans themselves. However the problem with vendors dressing down is that it is like waving a flag saying “here I am, I’m dressed poorly”. A vendor is different from a guest because as Jennifer describes, here was a photographer that stepped in front of a bride on her way down the aisle to be married. All eyes were on her and when that photographer stepped out into the aisle and stopped her progress down the aisle, all eyes were now on him and he was a distraction! A poorly dressed guess can disappear into a corner, or into a group of people, a vendor is front and center, in front of everyone and when a person who is poorly dressed steps into the spotlight next to someone who is dressed to the nines in their wedding gown or tux, the contrast between the two is like a flare being lite. Where as if the person is properly attired so that they look like 80% of your guests, the contrast drops.

In our opinion at Elkhart Weddings, you are paying a vendor to behave like a professional and respect you and your guests. An improperly dressed wedding vendor is not only unprofessional, they are an insult to your wedding, or party, or event, which you have planned so diligently for so long! Demand that the person you are paying respect you, ask them how they will dress and don’t be afraid to demand that the dress code want them to follow, is written into their contract!

Wedding Reception, Key To Success

March 2nd, 2012

With the Elkhart wedding season swinging into action in  just over a month , here is a tip to guarantee that your wedding reception is a wonderful success!  The bride and groom set  the energy level and determine by their actions the success of the wedding reception. We have seen it again and again over two decades of experience. Most guests take their cue on participation level from what the bride and groom are doing. If the bride and groom are just standing around talking to people, then the majority of guests are going to stand around and talk.. One sure fire way to kill your wedding reception is to not be in the banquet hall. We have seen many receptions come to a quick end because brides and grooms ended up outside smoking or in the entry way talking to guests for most of the night. We aren’t saying you can’t do this, just keep it short because when guests see that the two guests of honor aren’t around they start walking for the door. So at least spend as much time as possible inside your wedding reception hall, tent.

But as we said, the bride and groom set the energy level of the wedding reception! If you want people walking out the door exhausted from having fun, and you have a DJ or Band then both of you need to get out on the dance floor! Good DJs and bands will get people on the dance floor, but as we said many guests take their cue from the bride and groom and if the two of you are out on the floor shaking your bon bon for long stretches at a time then your guests will be out there with you. And yes we mean both of you, sorry grooms who don’t like to dance. A good band or DJ will always have people dancing and the one half of the bride and groom getting on the dance floor is good, but it is the energy of both of you partying out on the floor will get the more reticent guests to join in on the celebration!

A bride and groom participating can also overcome a bad DJ and take an empty dance floor and bring out at least a few people to dance.

The same applies to other activities like a photo booth. Your guests really do take the cue from you, as the bride and groom, and if they see you having fun in the photo booth, they are more likely to enjoy it themselves. We have seen people who absolutely refused to step into a booth and have their picture taken, change their minds once they see the happy couple enjoying it themselves.

You have spent thousands to enjoy your wedding day in and if you join in the activities your Elkhart wedding will be one to remember for years to come by all of your guests!

Sping Wedding Colors, Elkhart Weddings

February 24th, 2012

Fashion Week in NY City last fall declared the top spring color to be Tangerine Tango, one of the many colors that will dominate the color pallets of wedding this sprinn in Elkhart.

As Elkhart brides plan their weddings, the authority to check for color inspiration  is the color experts Pantone.  Pantone’s issued their spring 2012 fashion color trends, last fall as including Tangerine Tang, Margarita, Sweet Lilac, Solar Power and several more.  The colors are fun! As Bridal color’s are not limited to decor and bridesmaids alone, 2012 wedding dresses will be just as colorful.
